I Promise I Won't Be Wild

i'm notthe little girl no more
that "mommy" thinks i am
i still need her loving care
but i don't need her hand

i won't do anything stupid
or anything i'll regret
i love my mom with all my heart
but she has to see that i'm all set

i don't need her to walk me to school
or check my bed for bugs
but i'll always need her to talk to
and i'll always need her hugs

i'm getting more and more independent
and responsible every day
i've seen the drugs and sex and crime
but it doesn't mean i'll be that way

i know to make the right choices
no matter who i am around
how can i prove i'm growing up
without having to make a sound?

i don't need mom to watch over me
i no longer am a child
she needs to trust and respect me
i promise i won't be wild
