True Ghost Experiences
Waving Towel
I attended a historic southern woman's college in Virginia. It was mandatory to live in dorms, and the dorm my roommate and I stayed in was from 1908. Our room was a narrow rectangle. Entering from the hall, you were flanked by the two single-door closets, then enough space for our dressors, our beds (flush against the wall) with the head boards resting on the wall opposite the door, where the windows were.
Our closet doors were almost always open, and we hung our towels from the corner of the doors. Our windows faced into the quad, which was very well lit, and so there was always soft lighting in the room. One night as my roommate and I had gotton into our beds, turned off the lights, etc., one of the towels moved. My towel, one end still hanging off the door, had one of the bottom corners lifted so that the face of the towl was held up. The other end was still hanging off the door, so that it looked kind of flag-like. While it was hanging like this, it waved back and forth, again like a flag rippling in a breeze. I asked my roommate if she saw it (I wear glasses and didn't have them on so what I saw was blurry) . She said that she did and told me what she saw in more detail the next morning (before I told her what I saw). After about 1 minute, it stopped and the towel dropped back to its normal hanging position. We decided to deal with it when it was light outside!
It never happened again. It looked as if something we couldn't see had just lifted the corner of the towel and waggled it to get our attention. Other strange things had happened in our room, but this was the only one that simply could not be explained, however dubiously, by vibration or chance or whatever. Benign, but bewildering!
