Waving Towel

Sent in by Blamer

I attended ahistoric southern woman's college in Virginia. It was mandatoryto live in dorms, and the dorm my roommate and I stayed in wasfrom 1908. Our room was a narrow rectangle. Entering from thehall, you were flanked by the two single-door closets, thenenough space for our dressors, our beds (flush against the wall)with the head boards resting on the wall opposite the door, wherethe windows were.

Our closet doors were almost always open, and we hung our towelsfrom the corner of the doors. Our windows faced into the quad, which was very well lit, and so there was always soft lighting inthe room. One night as my roommate and I had gotton into ourbeds, turned off the lights, etc., one of the towels moved. Mytowel, one end still hanging off the door, had one of the bottomcorners lifted so that the face of the towl was held up. Theother end was still hanging off the door, so that it looked kindof flag-like. While it was hanging like this, it waved back andforth, again like a flag rippling in a breeze. I asked myroommate if she saw it (I wear glasses and didn't have them on sowhat I saw was blurry) . She said that she did and told me whatshe saw in more detail the next morning (before I told her what Isaw). After about 1 minute, it stopped and the towel dropped backto its normal hanging position. We decided to deal with it whenit was light outside!

It never happened again. It looked as if something we couldn'tsee had just lifted the corner of the towel and waggled it to getour attention. Other strange things had happened in our room, butthis was the only one that simply could not be explained, howeverdubiously, by vibration or chance or whatever. Benign, butbewildering!
