Serpent Sisters

Sent in by Ryan

The transition ofmoving a family from a big city (Boston, Mass), to a small Ohiotown, is not easily done nor appreciated. However, this didhappen to me when I was ten years old along with my seven yearold brother, my 5 year old sister, and my parents. My father wasrelocated to cincinnati for his job and was given the family farmhe grew up on as a child. The only difficult thing was that hehad inherited the farm 2 years before with the sudden death of mygrandma and the upkeep was very poor, so lots of work needed done.It was approximately 300 acres that was not going to be farmed, just lived on, which made the job much easier.

I had to come to the realization that since there were few kidsin the neighborhood, I would be spending alot of time with myciblings, this did not thrill me. I was an adventurous boy as wasmy brother, and we often found ourselves running through thewoods playing games with eachother. On a warm summer day, however, life as we knew it would not be the same for anyone inour family. It started out as a very normal day, with dad at workand mom making sure our breakfast plates were cleared before wewent out for our daily excipades. My brother and I were antsy asusual and went on our way walking to the woods, which began about2 football fields from the back yard.

We walked for several minutes looking for nothing, as usual, justbeing curious. To the left of us there was a moaning sound whichfroze us immideately with our heads in the direction of the sound.Without a word we began moving towards the moan we heardsimutanously, as if we were tranced. We continued walking andgrew less fearful, because the sound didnt return, so we figuredit must be an animal. As our fears began to deminish, we heardlaughing and several people walking around, but we saw nothing. The sound was more intense and continuous this time, and we bothlaid down behind a large log on the ground, peering overoccasionally to see if soemthing appeared.

The sound remained after 5 minutes so we decided it would be agood idea to slowly turn around and go back to the house. I gotup first, being the older, protective brother and my brotherimmideately followed. We began walikng slow then faster for about20 paces, when I glanced over my shoulder and froze in fear. Idid not notice what my brother was doing at the time, I was toomuch in shock. At almost the exact spot where we laid behind thelog, there was a run-down log house with three old ladies peeringat up. Two were looking out the window and one was standing underthe door frame with the door opened outward. When I saw them thesound of laughing stopped and total silence was the only thingthat I heard for what seemed like hours. I was stunned with fearand could not move, as was my brother, and we both described itas painfully still. After what was only a few seconds in reality,I began to run as fast as I could go back to the house, whit nodoubt that my brother was behind me from the extra set of footsteps I heard running close behind. When we returned to thehouse, we were both frantically crying to our mother, who didn'tknow what to take of the story because the closest neighbor was amile or so away from us. She made us stay in the house for therest of the day and watch tv, which we did. My father came homeearly when he heard this from my mother, who called him, and hadus take him the the exact spot where we were.

He had his shotgun with him and we were off, it was only 3:00 pm,so daylight was still strong as we entered the woods. As wecarefully approached the place where it happend, silence fellagain and any little sound was enough to make a heart stop. Itook him to the exact spot and described exactly what had happendand showed him the log that we hid by, and showed him the pointwhere we saw the house and the ladies. He was furious at us andtold us we were grounded for making him come home early from workfor nothing. After several minutes of us not convincing my dad,we were headed back, when we heard hissing and ratteling leaves.

All of us turned around quickly to see three giant snakes slidingfrom under the log we laid by. Nothing was said the rest of theday about this and me and my brother went to bed with puzzelingthoughts going through our minds. I was woke early next morningby the scream of my mother from her room which of course causedme to run to see what was the matter. I saw my father holding mymother in the corner by the window as she screamed frantically. Iran to the window and looked out to see the same giant snakesfrom the day before hung on my mother's clothes line split open, inside out.

No one can explain what happened that day, but I know what I sawand will never forget it. Nothing happend ever again andinvestigations showed no species of snake like the ones foundlived in north america. Think of it as you will, with an openmind!
