Bermuda Spirits
While on vacationin Bermuda during the summer of 95 my then girlfriend describedtwo sightings that though I myself could not see, I will neverforget and wholeheartedly believe. One occurred while in the hottub of a very nice beach front resort. The name of the hotel I donot recall because we were staying at a friends house that livedon the island and worked for NASA. If any one is familiar withBermuda the hotel was between The Swizzle Inn and the bridge toget to the airport. We were sitting in the hot tub, well aftermidnight, without another person to be seen or heard. I lookedacross the tub at my girlfriend and noticed that her head waslaid back against the edge as anyone would in a state of truerelaxation. The only problem with the picture was that her eyeswere open wider than I ever thought possible by a human being. The girl looked terrified. She was intently staring at somethingover the ledge of the deck and thin wooden rails of the tub. Ilooked in the direction that held her gaze and saw nothing. Atthat point I started to laugh because Jen had a fantastic senseof humor and was always making silly faces so I really didn'tthink much of her behavior at this point. She continued to stareand didn't move so so I called her name. No movement. I said hername again and this time reached out for her under the water andput my hand on her leg. She then turned to me and uttered thosefamous words, "Did you see that?" To which I obviouslyreplied, "See what?" She then proceeded to explain ingreat detail the face of a man that she could only describe as a"tribal hunter." She said that his face was adornedwith markings of color and scarification, and that she could notsee him holding it, but there was a spear protruding up throughthe bushes like someone would hold a tall walking stick. As sheis explaining this scene to me her eyes dart upwards and shemoves her eyes head in an arcing motion from left to right. Shethen turns to me in amazement and states that she just saw thisguy run and jump right over us. There was no way anyone could runand then jump that high/that far. She described it as though hewas almost flying but his pose when going over us was that ofsomeone running the hurdles.
The second sighting occurred in a small park about 30 yards offthe beach while sitting and leaning against a tree. In front ofus was a small garden of trees maybe 10 feet tall with a spacingof 10 to 15 feet between each tree in all directions. It was fouror five in the morning we had done dinner and the bars and thewalk on the beach, now we were just taking it easy and enjoyingthe cool night air. Jen and I were leaning against this tree andour friends Dan and Nat were off somewhere on their own agenda. This story varies from the first in that what Jen would seetonight would absolutely scare her to death. The first sightingin the hot tub was more or less, for lack of a better word,"cool." This sighting though scared me. I couldn't seeanything but because of the way Jen reacted you could probablysee my heart beating through my shirt. All of the sudden whilesitting there staring out into the trees talking about how greateverything is she just freezes and stares for 60 or 90 seconds. Alittle before that I had noticed her looking in that directionquite a bit but didn't think much of it. Then she leans forwardstaring into the trees and starts repeating, "Oh my God, Ohmy God." Then she just grabs my arm and starts pulling meaway, back up the hill towards the parking lot where the moped is.She's pulling my arm begging me to hurry and I start to feel thisterror too because Jen is the kind of woman who can take care ofherself and doesn't scare easily. Once we thought someone was inour apartment and she proceeded to march upstairs with a baseballbat to smash this would be intruders head in. At this point sheis so scared she leaves me runs to the moped and grabs her helmetwhich she proceeds to put on backwards. Now I do laugh and she isso scared she starts to laugh with me. You may too because thisis what she was so frightened by. In the trees on the groundunderneath one of them she saw a couple having a picnic. Theywere dressed in white, she said the whole scene seemed to glow. The clothing was older but from what time period she could notsay. She got so freaked out, she later told me, because most ofthe time when she sees these "spirits" if she stares atthem they will go away. Well she stared and stared and that'sexactly what they did back to her. She said she had the mostunbearable feeling that if she did not get us out of thereimmediately that they would have made us leave, and I guess Jenwasn't sticking around and see how they were going to do that.
