Beach House
This is about ahouse I shared with a friend, back in the early 80's. We livedthere a whole 2 months, before she was too freaked out to stay!It was a large old house, near the ocean. We rented it from alady she knew, and couldn't believe how cheap the rent was, forsuch a great house. (First clue!)
Anyway, the first sign anything was amiss, was one morning wecame downstairs and the cord to the washing machine wasunplugged, lying acroos the top of the washer. We both asked ifthe other had done it (no), so checked the doors and windows tomake sure everything was locked, then just plugged it back in,and forgot about it. Next morning, same thing. This spooked us (pardonthe pun), so we checked the house thoroughly, but no sign of anintruder.
That night as we sat in the dining room, we heard furnituremoving on the upstairs enclosed porch. We both froze, but itcontinued, so we snuck up the stairs quietly, and as we got tothe top, it stopped. We ran to the porch, threw open the door, but nothing had been moved.
Anyway, back to the dining room. The next thing we heard was thesound of many muffled voices, like you would hear through a wall.By this time we were scared, but went back up. Again, nothing. That night we slept in the same room with her daughter, who was18 months old, and not at all bothered by anything, it seemed.
The washer continued to be unplugged, the voices began everynight at about the same time, the living room developed a 'coldspot', the baby started seeing a man outside the living roomwindow, etc.. It was escalating, so we went to see the owner. When we asked her if anyone had told her anything 'weird' aboutthe house, she said "I wondered how long it would be beforeyou heard them'!
We looked into the history of the house, and found it was builtby a sea captain who died a natural death in the house. We hadthe place "cleansed" by a self-professed 'white witch',but it did no good, so we left. My friend was too afraid for herbaby, though nothing sinister ever happened.
