Hawaiian Story
This story comesfrom Glenn Grant, a collector of Hawaii's 'Spooky Tales', andsometimes they are ghost stories. I don't know, maybe you'veheard of him. I hope I do him right when I tell one of thestories, since I heard it from him. His stories are collectedfrom the older generations of Hawaii and they are true stories. It manages to scare all the visitors who come to Hawaii.
This story may not be a ghost story, but it is definitelypeculiar and creepy. It's kind of long. It goes something likethis:
At Waimea Falls, in the 1970's, there were three friends swimmingin the pool of the falls. One man was from Seattle and the othertwo were from San Diego,CA. They were vacationing in Honolulu andthey found Waimea Falls and they were swimming and having fun. They were jumping from the top of the rock down into thewaterfall to the pool. The guy from Seattle followed his friendsand when he jumped, he went down into the water (his friends sawhim) and never came back up. His friends went in and doveeverywhere looking for him. They spent the whole day looking forhim, they couldn't find him. He just disappeared into the water.
They called the police and two scared, very pale guys told theirstory. The Lieutenant Officer heard this and frowned. He gatheredup his police force, the HPD (Honolulu Police Department), andwent to Waimea Falls to search for the body. The Lieutenant knewthat this was the third time this year that somebody was missingat Waimea Falls, after three days they would find a dead body inthe pool. This was the first day the body was missing and theLieutenant thought that this could be his chance to actually findthe guy alive before the third day. They searched the falls andthe area around and they found nothing. He told the two friendsthat they should go back and get some sleep, maybe he would findtheir friend's body tommorrow. They told him NO--THEY WERE GOINGTO SLEEP THEIR OVER NIGHT. (Idiots) The liuetenant said okay, butI don't know if that would help at all.
That night at the falls the two friends were sleeping about tenfeet away from the pool. They were trying to sleep when theyheard some rustling in the bushes. They thought it was a wildboar or somekind of animal. They didn't move. They were about tofall asleep when they heard the animal scream. But, was it ananimal? It sounded so human. They jumped up and ran out of thatvalley so fast. They called the lieutenant and told him whathappened. Since it was close to daylight, the liuetenant startedhis search again. They searched for a long time. Today, the waterwas unusually clear and they thought they had a better chance atfinding something, but they couldn't find anything. At about 11or 12 midday he figured maybe he would see something in the waterif he climbed up to the water fall and looked down. He climbed upto the top and looked down. He looked and looked and finally hesaw a body of a man faced down(so you could only see his back) onwhat looked to be a big flat rock. He shouted to his officersthat the body was three feet away from them. They coudn't see it.They managed to pull his body out of the water without actuallyseeing it. When they saw his foot, they knew he was there. Asthey were putting the body on a stretcher, the lieutenant noticedthat the water in the pond was raising. He could see the waterbegin to bubble back and forth as if something was moving underthe water. Everyone was staring at the pond. All of a sudden thewater in the pond indeed started to rise and it looked like therewas going to be a wave of water coming out. They started to hurryand started to run out of the valley. They were running away asthis huge wave of water was behind them. It was as if somethingdidn't want them to find that body. The water splashed on theroad and beach as they got out of the valley.
The Liuetenant was amazed and poleaxed and could not explain thisstrange event. He wrote down in the report everything thathappened. The visitors from the mainland left the next day.
Later that year, he was talking to his Hawaiian friend, who livedin the town just outside of the valley. He never shared his workwith him and he decided to share his experience with him. He toldhis friend the story and his friend was said, "Ahh,waterfalls has an akua (a god) that requires male sacrificecertain times of the year. He didn't want the body to leave thepond because the ceremony wasn't finished, and when you took thebody out, the water was dirty so he threw the water out."Listening to this the Lieutenant decided that this had to makesense.
Glenn Grant heard this and many other stories where kids andpeople are swimming at the falls and they couldn't help but feela hand grabbing their feet as they got out of the water.
