Saving your Home from Robbery

Whether you are away on holidays, out for the evening or enjoying a summer afternoon in your back yard, you can ensure the security of your home by taking a few simple precautions.

According to KK Home Security, one third of all burglars enter the home through the back window. Easily visible locks, however, may deter some thieves because a window lock forces the thief to break the glass and risk attracting attention. Remember also that even small windows such as skylights or bathroom fanlights need locks - a thief can get through any gap larger than a human head!

Good lighting can also deter a thief. KK Security advises you to "look in when you're out". Most burglaries occur when a house is empty; therefore, they recommend that you use time switches to turn on lights, radios and other appliances when you are not at home.

As well, visible burglar alarms can be a very wise investment. KK Security recommends that you get advice from professional home security companies and that you ask several companies for quotes. As well, they suggest that you contact your insurance company to see which type of home security systems they recommend.

If you live in an apartment, the most vulnerable part of your dwelling is likely to be the front door. It is suggested that you:

-Replace a weak door. It should be as strong as the apartment's main entry door.

-Fit hinge bolts which prevent the door from being pulled off its hinges.

-Fit a steel strip to the door frame to strengthen it.

-Consider having a door telephone entry system. Never "buzz" open the door for strangers or hold the door open for someone who is arriving as you are leaving.

When You Are Away For An Extended Period. . .

-Notify a trusted neighbour that you will be going on vacation. Ask them if they will keep an eye on things until you get back.

-Ask your neighbours to collect your mail for you.

-Make a video of all your valuables. Record serial numbers and keep the tape and this information in a safe place.

-Lock all tools, ladders and deck chairs up and out of sight.

-Lock all doors and windows - including those in the garage and shed.

-Cancel your newspaper and put a sign on your mailbox indicating that flyers are not accepted.

-Arrange for yardwork/snow removal etc. to be done if you will be away for any length of time.

By following these few simple tips, you can rest easier knowing your home, sweet home, is safe.
