Meaning:
Kakorrhaphiophobia is an intense, irrational fear of failure or defeat. The person coping with this phobia may fear failure in every single aspect of their life and may feel that they must constantly prove themselves as being better, more able and more competent than others. A kakorrhaphiophobic individual may aggressively compete with peers, family members, co-workers and may obsessively seek acknowledgment of their achievements. This morbid fear of failure can consume the phobic person’s every thought.
Kakorrhaphiophobia derives from the Greek word “kakos”, meaning bad and “phobos” meaning fear. It is of interest to note, that this phobia could be literally construed to mean fear of being bad.
What Causes Kakorrhaphiophobia?
1. As is the case with all phobias, the person suffering from Kakorrhaphiophobia has experienced a real-life trauma at some point in their life.
2. Thereafter, when the phobic individual confronts any situation that even remotely reminds them of the trauma, their brain automatically signals a fight or flight reaction.
3. The most obvious cause of Kakorrhaphiophobia is an experience of failure.
4. Perhaps the individual dealing with this phobia also experienced severe consequences because of that failure.
5. Maybe the kakorrhaphiophobic person is highly competitive and was encouraged to avoid failure or defeat at any cost.
6. Maybe this person was highly sensitive to the peer pressure that we all experience in our school years and a phobia developed over the years.
Whatever the cause, the kakorrhaphiophobic person can experience intense anxiety and emotional turmoil that is completely disruptive to their ability to function.
What Are the Symptoms of Kakorrhaphiophobia?
The symptoms of Kakorrhaphiophobia are individual and will vary among people. Some people, when confronted with their fear of failure and defeat, may begin to perspire, feel slightly uncomfortable or become nauseated. At the opposite end of the spectrum, other people are so severely compromised by this phobia, that they may experience crippling anxiety and/or panic attacks.
Other symptoms of Kakorrhaphiophobia may include:
1. A Dry Mouth while the loosing fear comes on the mind.
2. Heart palpitations even while thinking of the loosing moment.
3. Numbness in hand & legs.
4. Heightened senses around the body
5. Breathlessness while arguing on certain matters.
6. Feeling Dizzy all the time.
7. Muscle Tension & contraction is experienced.
8. Hyperventilation.
9. Trembling.
10. Rapid increase in the heartbeat.
11. Feeling out of control.
12. Feeling trapped and unable to escape from the surrounding.
13. Intense feeling of impending disaster is also felt.
How Is Kakorrhaphiophobia Treated?
When the fear of failure and defeat becomes intense enough to disrupt an individual’s ability to function, there are a number of ways to treat Kakorrhaphiophobia.
These can include:
1. A referral from the primary physician to a therapist who specializes in the treatment of phobias.
2. Traditional “talk” therapy that will teach the person to recognize and control their phobia.
3. Hypnotherapy.
4. Exposure Therapy.
5. Self-help techniques such as purposeful muscle relaxation.
6. Support groups with other people who are coping with this specific phobia.
7. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Desensitization Therapy.
8. Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and visualization.
9. In severe cases of Kakorrhaphiophobia, anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed.
Kakorrhaphiophobia- fear of failure or defeat is something that can ruin your life if you let it.
It is a sleep-robbing phobia that snatches away your mental peace.
This type of phobia does have a significant impact on the quality of your life and before it worsens life to a great extent; look out for possible solutions.
What Triggers Kakorrhaphiophobia?
1. Kakorrhaphiophobia initiates from the very childhood in the school level.
2. It so happens that the fear takes a perpetual shelter in the mind with the growing of age, when you confront the adversities of the big world outside school.
3. Life becomes more complicated and the peer pressure grows strong, thus pushing you into a world where competition is very high. It plagues your mind, thus deterring you from thinking logically.
4. The fear may erupt for every trifle reason like fear of marriage, fear of being bad parent, fear of failing to get a good job, fear of not getting promoted are some of the most common fears that clouds the mind and stops you from reaching any concrete decision.
5. Fear of failure or Kakorrhaphiophobia tends to overpower your life, when the pressure is unbearable from all facets of life and you feel the obligation of outstanding the others around you.
6. An inner conflict is usually very common at this point and you feel a surge of unrest nibbling at your peace slowly and steadily.
7. The main problem is that you feel that you are not safe and unless you prove yourself, you are not worth of all the others around you. So, you are always at the edge of fear of taking risk, since that may lead to fear of failure.
Eliminating The Fear Of Kakorrhaphiophobia:
The right way to start garnering courage is by accepting risk and failure at the same time. Have a logical reasoning in mind that failure is part of life and unless you fail, you will never succeed. You have to move on in life and so accept both negative and positive circumstances gleefully.
This will encourage you to get along with life and that too very happily. Make yourself willing to accept new things always. But always try new things with innovative and experienced ideas.

Shed off a few complicated feelings from the mind like feelings of jealousy, anger, selfishness, weakness, inadequacy, unhappiness and discomfort. Extract the passion of life from what you have got and you will eventually find happiness.
