You can wear down the other party's resistance to a point where you leave them with no other option but to surrender and throw in the towel. Often, you tend to recognize your enemies late, and that betrayal of trust seems to touch a raw nerve. Many of you tend to have more 'hidden' enemies in the family circle than amongst your friend's circle or competitors, which is one reason why you're late in recognizing them. In any case, because you're unsuspecting, you tend to be 'soft' targets. Once you've recognized them, it takes you a while to get over it and get your act together to make 'battle' preparations.
